'Yan 'Yon History
For those of you who have wondered,"how did these guys get together?", this short summary is just the right spot to find out.It all started in October of 1993 along the Spadina & College area at an old bar called CUBAO. Founded by Freddy "Pil/Pol/Lover Boy" Rosalin, the Band "Bolero" came into being. It consisted of 3 members; Fred on the Bass, Danny Yuboco on the drums, and a veteran lead guitarist, Ricky Rosas.
Playing at the bar every weekend, they realized they needed some more talent to widen their imaginations. So they found their first keyboard player, "Smokey" Frank who had a reputation for eating to the stomach's fullest extent. Then, on a winter's evening on December of 1993, They met up with Vivian Mendoza and soon became a permanent addition to Bolero in April of '94. Also in December of '93, Mel Verastique began to jam with the group, and because of his experience in a wide variety of music and with the hectic schedule of Ricky, filled in as the new lead guitar position. Though Danny was to be the permanent position for the drum kit, his schedule was also a burden and was soon replaced by a young, up and coming master of time from Humber College, Fernando Nicolas.
In April of '94, Freddy Renamed the Band 'Yan 'Yon, extending it's membership to 5: Fred, Fernando, Mel, Vivian and Frank.
The band began to hold concerts with many other artists as well such as Jocelyn Escutin (Former hostess of Philippine Sundae) and Cano Mańoso (Former host of Philippine Sundae).
In '96, Freddy felt that the band should get some help on the male vocalist side. It was perfect timing when Fred played at a church at the corner of Sherbourne & College and found 2-4-da Road, a singing duo featuring Jeffrey Arota and George Mendoza. They both became a welcome addition to the group at their first perfomance at a jam-packed Bodega in August of '96.After a few months, however, George Mendoza became busy with his new DJ business and decided to go solo. To try and replace him, Fred found a young man by the name of Allan Quiogue. However, he too would leave the band, as he decided to return to the Philippines.
In '97, the keyboard position becme open as Frank had other activities to cater to. So it was perfect timing that Jun Elopre arrived, to fill in both the keyboard position and the void falsetto vocal position so vital to the 'Yan 'Yon Band experience. In the summer of '97, at a party at Viv's house, 'Yan 'Yon Band was introduced to it's Kidd, Jason De La Cruz, who's background in music fit perfectly into the groove of the band, offering an extra keyboard and the sexy sax.
In '98, Vivian became busy in her overall schedule, and is currently in hiding (meaning she's still with the group...hehehe). But in the meantime, the positions of lead female vocalist were fitted in by not one, but two new excellent singer/dancers, Chyrell Samson and Emmalyn Destacamiento. And thus, the Future...is NOW.
